Day 21 - Castroville - San Antonio
39 miles
Three weeks in, half way done!
Woke up at a reasonable hour 6ish. So the town I stayed at is known for its German heritage. In the morning I went to the bakery and got some delicious donuts!
I was on the road pretty quickly in the morning. So I took US 90 into San Antonio. That got a little sketchy. It picked up quicker than I thought it was going to. I made it through. I jumped off US 90 and went on to Old US 90. I can't get away from this thing! Funny enough, US90 goes all the way to Jacksonville, and I think the maps I have will have me connect with it again!
To navigate through San Antonio I just used Google maps. It didn't excellent job of getting me on roads that had bike lanes or wide shoulders. People in San Antonio drive very poorly. On one occasion I saw someone driving the opposite way on the shoulder. Very sketchy. But the bike lanes were extremely safe and it reminded me a lot of riding through Minneapolis.
Honestly, getting through San Antonio was easier than El Paso. That is crazy...
Before I made it to my aunt's house, I stopped off at a bike shop. They helped me significantly with my wheels. They corrected some of the tension with the spokes, and made the wheels more aligned (dished).
From there I want to my aunt's house, this was a little bit more challenging of riding. However, I just sat in the right lane. Right in the middle of it. Cars can go around. It was a four-lane, with no shoulder so I didn't really have an option
This is weird, but getting to my aunt's house was even better than I thought it was going to be! I've been waiting for this for weeks. And those weeks are long when you're on a bike! So good!
Great food, great conversation, a pretty great day.
My aunt took me to a Mexican restaurant, and I believe it might have been the biggest restaurant I've ever been in in my life. This place was massive! It blew my mind. The food... the food was so good!
A really solid day, a milestone day, and a day with family. It cannot get much better than this
