Day 9 - Huachuca City - Bisbee
41 miles
Not the best day...
Got to sleep in considerably. Rod drove me back to where he picked me up (the park) at 7:00 a.m.
At around 7:30. Made it just about 2 hours and then I broke a spoke. No bike shops for the next 300ish miles, but there were two that were 10 mi back. Unfortunately both of the bike shops were closed on Sunday and on Monday. I know I probably shouldn't be riding on a broken spoke for 300 mi so my options are limited.
I call everyone. Literally everyone. And no clear answers came. You look like I was going to have to wait until Tuesday. After a while sitting on the side of the road, Rod came by and picked me up. He said we're heading to Tucson.
Yep, Rod was so kind that he drove me all the way back to Tucson to get my bike fixed. Thank you so much Rod! This was a game changer!
We got to Tucson, And I finally found out why I keep breaking spokes. My wheels are cracking where the spokes go into them. Front and back... In some spots it is pretty bad. These cracks have been there for a while. Kind of stinks.
So for the next 2 hours I was scrambling to figure out where I'm going to get these wheels. Unfortunately, there were very few bike shops that I could actually call. As most of them were closed on Sunday.
Long story short, I got slightly pre-owned wheels waiting for me in El Paso. Now I just have to get to El Paso.
At this point my wheels could get me there, or I'm hitchhiking. I bought all the tools to fix a spoke, so I have the ability to fix two more, but if the wheel blows up, it blows up...
Anyway I get all that sorted out. On the bright side I did get to have In-N-Out Burger for the first time. It was pretty solid!
After Tucson, Rod drove me out to where my spoke broke and around 5:30 I was off again.
Took it easy, got to my host's house in Bisbee close to 7:30. Jill was very welcoming and made me feel right at home! Lots of good food and conversation.
I really don't know what the next couple days will bring. I really don't know...
Regardless, a tremendous thanks to Rod for getting me back on the road today! Thank you
